Who is responsible for this website
PuTTY Field Guide is published by the independent developer behind Freeware Catalog. You can contact the operator at admin@freewarecatalog.com about this notice or privacy questions. This is a separate publication from the official PuTTY project. Read About this guide for our relationship to the software's authors.
Information involved in visiting the site
There is no application database of visitors on this website. We do not ask you to register, collect SSH credentials, or run a form that uploads your files. Nevertheless, serving a website requires technical information to pass through the hosting provider. Cloudflare can process your IP address, request URL, browser information and security-related request data to deliver the pages and operate its network.
This processing is different from a marketing profile or a session recording. We do not claim that visiting a hosted website transmits no data at all. Cloudflare's own policies describe its infrastructure processing, security practices and international operations. See the Cloudflare Privacy Policy for details. We have not specified a separate retention period for provider-managed infrastructure logs.
Cookies, local storage and theme settings
The site's own code does not set analytics or advertising cookies. It uses
one local-storage entry, putty-guide-theme, if you explicitly
choose a light or dark appearance. The value records an appearance
preference, not a visitor identifier. It stays in your browser and is not
sent to an analytics service by our code.
You can choose System in the theme menu to remove that stored preference and follow your browser or operating system. Clearing this site's browser storage also removes it. If local storage is blocked, the automatic appearance still works and the page remains readable. Infrastructure-level security features may be managed by Cloudflare; their behaviour is separate from the site's theme setting.
Downloads and external websites
Choosing a download sends your browser to the PuTTY project's file host. The receiving host necessarily receives the request and associated network information. Its policies apply there. We do not proxy the installer or collect a copy of your download history in an application database.
Links to the manual, release page, licence, Freeware Catalog and Cloudflare also leave this site. The linked websites have their own privacy practices. We use a no-referrer policy so the browser is instructed not to send this page's address as a referrer. That does not conceal your IP address from the destination or replace its own privacy controls.
Messages you send us
If you email the operator, your email address and the contents of your message are processed to respond, investigate a reported problem or handle your request. Email is handled outside this static website by the operator's email services. Keep your message limited to what is necessary. Never send a private SSH key, password or a confidential server log.
Messages may be retained while handling the issue and when needed for follow-up or applicable obligations. We do not publish your message as a testimonial without permission. Contact us if you want to ask about access, correction or deletion of information you supplied. Applicable rights and any exceptions depend on the circumstances; this notice does not replace those rights.
Changes to this notice
If we introduce a feature that changes data processing, we will update this notice and its date. Advertising or optional analytics would require a separate assessment and appropriate controls rather than quietly being described as a theme preference. The current publication is designed to work without those services.
